I could hear the sound of waves, wind, rolling gravel, and many other sounds, but I was lonely.

It looks like a dark sky because the mountains in the background are in the shade. You are right, it is like the surface of the moon.
The sand contains a lot of bits of shells and reflects the sunlight very well.
