"Looking for Men" Event Recap with Dean Chalkley

For the closing event of the Festival of New Masculinity, photographer Dean Chalkey set up "Looking for Men", an exhibition at the Book Club in London. On the day he set himself the challenge of photographing the first 100 visitors to the show with the Lomo'Instant Wide and a digital camera. Here are just a small selection of images from that event.

The photos you see here were all taken on the last day of the Festival of New Masculinity, set up by The Book Of Man. Some of these people arrived after seeing a social media call out for people to attend this event. Others were working locally and some just popped in, curious to see what was happening. Each person attending was photographed for a few minutes with Dean Chalkey, mixing between digital shots and instant using the Lomo'Instant Wide. He even asked the subjects a couple of questions about who they are, what they do and "what it means to be a man today?" Some of the responses we have included in this post.

"Being a man today is about being strong enough to care for others and to admit your weaknesses along the way. - Anthony Robbins"

The resulting set of photographs show a diverse range of portraits showing people from all walks of life, all of whom had their own, unique story to tell. Here is a selection of just a few of the photos taken on the day. Dean even asked a couple of people about their lives and "what it means to be a man today?"

"To me, being a man today means re-evaluating traditionally “masculine” qualities or things that are perceived as being “masculine”, and changing what they mean. For example, the quality of strength I read to mean honesty: doing difficult things means that you’re strong, and often being honest about your actions, your attitudes and yourself is one of the most difficult things to do, and so an honest man is a strong one. - Oscar"
