Hi Josh, Welcome to the Lomography Magazine. Please introduce yourself to the Lomography Community.

My name is Josh, I’m an illustrator based in Leeds, England. I work freelance, under the name JoshParkyArt. I love the freedom to create, that it provides. It also means no one-week is ever really the same, keeping me on my toes. My studio is a mass of tracing paper, sketchbooks, pens, and pencils, as well as books, memorabilia and reminders of past projects. I like to think my unique style and quirky approach to projects are what sets me aside from other creative types. I love to create hand-illustrated work, the real stuff; ink on paper. I also have a fondness of scanning, and then editing my work digitally, adding colors and textures. This way of working has led me to collaborate with some of the biggest brands in the world, including the likes of Adidas, Puma, Xbox, The North Face, Fitbit and Converse to name a few. To be able to add Lomography to that already thriving client list is something I’m really proud of.

How did you get into becoming an illustrator?

As cliché as it sounds, I’ve always drawn and sketched. Some of my earliest and fondest memories are coming home from school, setting up my workstation at the kitchen table and drawing until night. I’d have big packs of pens and pencils that I’d accumulated over the years, with a stack of printer paper. Everyone in the house used to complain there was never any paper in the printer tray, sorry guys! It was only really at the latter stages of my time at Art College that I clocked that you could actually make a career out of this thing I loved doing. I eventually went to study Illustration at Liverpool.

Tell us more about how you designed the Lomo'Instant Automat. What was the idea behind this & what medium did you use?

The beauty of the Lomo’Instant Automat, for me, is that you have a limited time to point and shoot your subject, before a change of lighting can dramatically affect the outcome of your photograph. I wanted to illustrate in the same way, so with that in mind, I wrote the word Photography in my sketchbook, I then timed 5 minutes on my phone, and challenged myself to brainstorm and sketch as many things I could in relation to the word. I used tracing paper to form more refined illustrations and then drew directly onto the camera, manipulating individual elements to fit perfectly into all the intricate sections of the camera.

What's coming up for the rest of the year.

It’s hard to say just yet. I want 2022 to be about building. The year ended strongly, creating artwork for Leeds United, Puma and New Balance respectively. I’m hoping 2022 means the return of in-person brand launches, trade shows and open days, meaning I can get back to live-drawing at events! Something I love to do. One final note, I had the busiest year to date with my personal commission service. To be asked to draw couples, families, and pets for people to then gift to loved ones and display in their homes is a great honor for me. If you like my art style, don’t hesitate to give me an email or social media DM, and we can discuss how to arrange your very own JoshParkyArt commission.
