Carla Dief's Dreamy and Detailed Portraits with the Petzval 80.5 Art Lens

A few months ago we got to know Spanish photographer and YouTuber Carla Dief when she tested our LomoChrome Metropolis film. She now tried out our Petzval 80.5 Art Lens for the first time on a daydream-like photoshoot, resulting in soft yet detailed pictures!

Hi Carla, welcome back! All these amazing portraits were taken with a lens that you wanted to try for a long time, the Petzval 80.5 Art Lens. How was your "expectations vs. reality" experience?

Thank you! This lens has matched my expectations perfectly. The contrast, sharpness, and color are so good. I usually take photos on film, and because of that, I feel comfortable with a manual lens like this one.

What features of the lens did you like the most and what were the aspects you liked the least?

Like I said in the previous question I love the sharpness, contrast, and color of this Petzval lens. I know a lot of people who are looking for this lens because of the swirly bokeh, but it is not the most important characteristic in a lens for me. For me is more important the sharpness and the texture. And about the cons...The aperture and focal ring go so smooth and this is crucial for a great experience using a manual lens. The aperture ring in this lens is placed at the front and the focal ring is placed at the back which is the opposite way of the other lenses and sometimes this is confusing but is not a big deal.

You do a lot of portrait photography: do you think that this lens, with its unique bokeh effects, can integrate with your photographic style?

Of course! I think this is an amazing lens for portraiture and not only for the bokeh but also for the focal length. My main digital lens for portraits is an 85 mm f1.8 and I love the similar focal length of the Petzval 80.5 mm f1.9.

Which camera did you use for these shots?

I used my Nikon Z6 MKI which is my main digital camera.

In your last interview you mentioned that you were working on your first photography fanzine. How is it going?

It's going well! I'm planning to publish it by the end of January.

What should we expect from your next Youtube videos?

For this year, I have planned some trips and I'm going to take photos of everyone. And of course, I will do a YouTube video of every single one. I love to travel and I love to take pictures and this is the perfect combination.
