Film Soup: Love Potion Recipe

This Valentine’s Day perhaps your sweetheart was in a romantic mood and gifted you some flowers. Though they might have suspected you would do some funky experimental things with them, after all they do know you well, right?

So if your bouquet is starting to wilt, then it's time to use the flowers for some pictures, and they can be the perfect ingredients for a film soup. This way you can maximize the life of your blossoms and make their sacrifice worthwhile.

Etch your love with silver halide, add some spice with a magic potion, and this Valentine’s Day, love will stick forever - at least on film.

Ingredients

For this film soup, we used Lomography Color Negative 35 mm ISO 100 and some ingredients that we had in our kitchen:

  • Beetroots
  • Red vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Flowers

Beetroots spice up your colors with some purple and red hues, and red vinegar adds an element of acidity to your ingredients (lemon also works well). Then to make it really special, we included detergent and salt. Lastly, add your flowers to the brew and let them macerate overnight. The longer they soak, the stronger the effect will be.

Dry the film for at least a week, and then self-develop with C-41 process. As you know, not many labs will take your film soup to develop, so this is a perfect excuse to start practicing with color self-development.

There are options available online with a one-time kit solution, easy to try at home. The most important aspect of color development is to keep your temperature on spot at 30 degrees. If you follow the producer manual it will give you good results.

As always the most important factor is to have fun and learn something to enrich your photography practice. There is no limit to your imagination.
