Synesthesia #2: Imagined Album Covers of Lomography

Photography and music are two art forms that have always complemented each other. From documenting nightlife and preserving niche underground scenes, to capturing artists at their best and immortalizing them forever, photography is an essential part of any music scene.

For this edition of the Synesthesia series, I will be looking at more photos from the Lomography Community and seeing how they remind me of some of my favorite tracks. Expect a blend of old-school rave tunes, high-energy jazz, guilty pleasures, and forgotten gems.

The first picture by @cst23 reminded me of the acclaimed Danny Boyle movie Trainspotting. I can't quite understand why. Maybe the action of the kid jumping and the use of black and white just transported me back to a time where electronic music was on the rise and becoming part of the mainstream. Other than that I could see this being used for albums that dwell in that realm of breakbeat, techno, and UK Garage.

This picture by @comehome could be a cover or artist photo for something jazzy, melancholic and even dwelling into more experimental and electronic territory. I could hear the slow heavy guitar riffs, the reverbed-out piano, and the mellow yet powerful vocals.

When I saw this photo by @paulestevez I was immediately reminded of one of my favorite ambient artists Ana Roxanne. The more I gazed into the washed-out blue and splatters of orange, the more I wanted to listen to music that would transport me into another realm and let me daydream. This dreamy photo made me pick out some of my favorite ambient and electronic instrumental selections.

@christian_heidebur captures the moon with the LomoChrome Turquoise to great effect. Bringing out sci-fi vibes and making it seem as if we are on another planet, the photo reminded me of songs that use elements of sci-fi and space in their names as well as high-tempo jazz and fast percussions.

Reminiscent of obscure instrumental or soundtrack albums you might find at record stores, @queershootsfilm uses Lomography Color Negative ISO 100 to capture Yellowstone National Park In Wyoming. My selections for this are a mixed bag, like inevitably being surprised after choosing an album by it's album cover, but these choices revolve around jazz selections.

@moodification's picture reminds me of a 90s-2000s indie rock/pop record that has a mix of slower songs that revolve around themes of love but also having a few songs that are more upbeat with overdriven guitars and emotional vocals. Taken with the Lomo Lubitel 166+ this picture instantly would be an iconic album cover for any band.
