Aitane Goñi Landa's Experimental Film Photography With the Diana F+

We got to know Aitane when she was selected as a contributor for the zine Somos Paisajes, which we created in collaboration with Etereo, entirely shot on Lomography film. Today Aitane is back on our Online Magazine with a photographic series shot using our Diana F+ Camera & Flash and a roll of Berlin Kino B&W film. Check out her creative results!

Hi Aitane, welcome back to our magazine! What have you been up to lately?

I work as a part of arriguri, a group of creators from the Basque Country. We normally have a lot of shoots, especially music videos. The latest have been for Almar by Merina Gris, Calor by Ona Mafalda and Vampireando by Hofe + La Élite. The truth is that, as well as trying to get more personal projects off the ground, I almost always work with music bands.

For those who don't know you yet, can you please tell us about yourself?

I studied history and I am also a teacher, each year of a different subject. I am also a photographer, or at least everyone sees it that way, but nothing professional because in arriguri, I have an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on how you look at it – that is that I have a lot of freedom, so much so that I can also do things badly. Actually, I would say that I don't know how to take photos, that I don't care about calculating the light, that I just shoot. I don't even know how to frame. But I've been doing it "inadvertently" for a very long time.

When did your journey in the photography world start?

It started around...2012? 2013? I bought a Canon FT QL on ebay for 45 euros just because it was pretty, I didn't expect it to be a marvel. I took it everywhere. It's a tank and it's quite heavy. Then we set up the production company arriguri, and today we have many more cameras. We still do photography for some works, and mostly we use it as still-photography. We normally take analogue photos on all the shoots we do.

What are the pros and cons of film compared to digital photography?

To tell you the truth I don't know how to take digital photos. I understand the advantages of digital but they don't interest me. It has certain values that we don't want to reproduce – speed, immediacy, perfection. We use digital cameras as a photometer.

Tell us the story behind these wonderful and unique shots taken with our Diana F+ Camera & Flash and Berlin Kino 400 film. What is the idea behind this series?

I didn't want them to be flashy and I think the Berlin Kino B&W 120 ISO 400 film was the right choice. I wanted something simple so I opted for self-portraits here at home (I had help while doing them). I've been thinking for a long time about how to get images from other images, to get other formats, other ways of doing things and not always depend on photography. That's why there are not only photographs, there are also prints, scans, which end up being collages made with anything related to the project.

What is the best advice you have received and what advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career as a photographer?

The best advice I've had, and that I love to put in practice, is to discuss the photographs with the team once we receive them from the lab. We usually discuss about what we've done well, what we've done badly, where we've used the light well, where we've used it badly, commenting on poses, compositions. I've only recently realized this but it has helped me a lot. My advice is to have a good team to help you.
