Synesthesia #3: Imagined Album Covers of Lomography

1

Photography and music are two art forms that have always complemented each other. From documenting nightlife and preserving niche underground scenes, to capturing artists at their best and immortalizing them forever, photography is an essential part of any music scene.

For this third edition of Synesthesia, I tap my fellow Lomography officemates to share their unique and diverse music tastes with you. Starting off with a short list of different photos from the community and letting my officemates choose photos that speak to them, they ended up sharing music choices based on feelings and moods rather than musical genres. Tapping into nostalgic women-led bands to more reflective and emotional tunes, let us guide you into discovering and returning to some fine musical gems.

Jojo Focbit: Seeing this photo of @expirededexposures took me back to the late 90s to early 2000s music era wherein female-lead rock bands were dominating the charts. I really can't believe that this music was produced a decade years ago. Still feels like yesterday when listening to it now.

Songs to listen to:
The Pretty Reckless - Just Tonight
Evanescence - Call Me When You're Sober
Halestorm - I Miss The Misery
Paramore - Pressure

Edgar Alberto: Being overly fascinated by everything Japanese, this photo by akio_nakai reminded me of an anime from the early 2000s and my time when I visited Japan which was also during the spring season when Sakura trees are in full bloom.

Songs to listen to:
Splay - Sakura Addiction
Spitz - Cherry
Ryuichi Sakamoto / Alva Noto - By This River
Ikimono Gakari- Sakura

Denise Jamias: This multiple-exposure photograph of stained glass windows of the Coventry Cathedral by @stevejack0 could be a cover photo for something indie folk, alternative rock, or dream pop. I can imagine lyrical writing that transits between religious and literary themes, and mellow and ambient music translated from feelings of anguish and yearning.

Songs to listen to:

Ethel Cain - A House in Nebraska
Hozier - Would That I
Sufjan Stevens - John My Beloved

AJ Bajo: This photo by @whilethemusiclasts reminds me of reflective moments filled with heavy thoughts. Like a midday or an afternoon lying in bed and looking outside while still reeling from a hangover. Or perhaps taking a break from the constant social media consumption to rest your mind which leads to you almost being shocked by the silence. Or a stroll in your hometown after having been gone for a couple of years. There's something eerily beautiful about this photo. I can imagine indie, ambient, folk, or blues music that can fit, basically music that allows you to drift between thoughts and transcend the quiet moment.

Thom Yorke - Dawn Chorus
The Civil Wars - My Father's Father
To Kill A King - Bloody Shirt
Alabama Shakes - Sound and Color
