Shooting LomoChrome Metropolis Outside of Its Comfort Zone

Choosing locations to shoot LomoChrome Metropolis is pretty easy. Surely it shines in the city, right? The film stock is known for giving off retro vibes perfect for that cityscape shot, the streets and alleys reminiscent of 90s or early 2000s movies.

But there's little room for comfort and tradition when shooting with the Lomography philosophy in mind, and these albums by some of our community members prove so. Thinking outside of the box that the color-shifting film stock came in, they took LomoChrome Metropolis just about anywhere and everywhere in the spirit of curiosity.

By the Seaside

Community member Tim (@amsiglela_yallehei) takes us back to memories walking by the beach on a windy afternoon with these grainy images of Adelaide's seaside, taken with LomoChrome Metropolis. He talked to us about his favorite aspects of shooting the film stock.

I found it to be an excellent film for shooting the beach because the bias of the film brings out the green of the sea, the high contrast of the film highlights the foam of the waves, and the graininess of the film is like the graininess of the sand.
Sometimes I take photos in a pine forest near where I live, and one day I hope to use Lomochrome Metropolis there. I have seen photos other people have taken in forests with this film and I think the green leaves look great. For example, I really like these shots by @smolda and @vicuna.

Also, I might use either my Lomography Fisheye adapter, or my Fisheye no. 2, as I think the muted palette of this film would probably minimize the chromatic aberration usually associated with plastic lenses. - Tim, a.k.a. @amsiglela_yallehei

In a Gloomy Forest

These are a few photos we would've found it hard to guess were taken with LomoChrome Metropolis. Community member Steffen's album "Welcome to Grainwood Forest" is a perfect description for these photos which, with help from the film stock, appeared with more contrast, prominent shadows and a little bit more eeriness.

It could be the setting for unusual sights and sounds – the forbidden woods in a thriller film, or really just the venue for a nice and interesting afternoon walk.

In a Bubble Bath

In this bubble bath film soup experiment by @agrimony, we see LomoChrome Metropolis like we've never seen it before. Using it with the Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens, @agrimony takes a closer look of flowers and insects, and tosses the roll into bathwater. It's safe to say, the results definitely look clean!

I used the LomoChrome Metropolis with my Olympus Pen F and my Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens at ASA 100. The ingredients of the film soup were a red bubble bath tablet and boiling water. I mixed these two in a former honey glass and then put the film into it. I let the film soak for about four hours after I shot it and dried it for some days. I then developed it myself. The whole film came out pinkish. - Monika, a.k.a. @agrimony

Summer Disappearing

Meanwhile, community member @jeanne_d_arctique paired the film stock with the Nikon FE and the Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens to share an intricate view of the autumnal equinox in Greenland in these photos.

The grain accompanied by the art lens' signature soft effect creates a textured background which gives Jeanne's often overlooked subjects a more curious face.

Above the Clouds in Winter

Lastly, community member Fritz (@mloscik) gives us a view of a Polish winter above the clouds. The sparse subjects pop out of the vast expanse of snow and clouds, such as a figure walking in the distance, and a curious mountain goat.
