Making a Moment: Jacqueline Badeaux Shares Her Favorite Photo

1

In our article series, Making a Moment, we’re asking photographers to share one of their favorite photos that they’ve taken. We want to know the story behind the final image and everything that went into making it.

Today we’re taking a look at a moody and grain-laden double exposure by Jacqueline Badeaux (@jacquelinebadeaux) which she took using the Lomo LC-A+.

Jacqueline is a self taught photographer and has been shooting film for about 18 years. After taking a darkroom class in high school she became hooked and began developing both black-and-white and color film at home. Eventually she moved on to also try more experimental techniques like film soups and building pinhole cameras.

We have featured her unique photography several times, most recently with her collection of eerie and experimental photos taken with the Diana F+ and Lomo LC-A 120.

Jacqueline: This image will likely always be my favorite photo I’ve taken. It was taken in San Luis Valley, Colorado on a Road trip with my friend from Texas. It will be included in my project S.L.V, a series all taken in San Luis Valley, in memory of my father who passed. I like to think of the camera as a vessel that holds, captures, and transmutes magic. The photo images contemplate impermanence, alchemy, dream, and nostalgia.

This photograph was taken with a Lomo LC-A 35 mm using a Splitzer for the second exposure to capture just the top half of her face. I took the two shots within minutes of each other. Her name is Camille and she and I had a very inspired period together where we’d travel and photograph non-stop and I never had to direct her. She understood what I was going for every time without language and my photos of her are so special.

This is when I was starting to realize the endless possibilities of creating a different world in the moment and manipulating images in-camera. This was taken with Ilford Delta 3200 and processed at home. I have always loved the presence of grain in an image so I shoot it in the day to achieve that.

I’m looking to create a new way of seeing with the images I create. I’m most interested in the unknown.
