Apo Whang Od (Philippines #1)

This is Apo Whang Od, presumably the oldest tattoo artist in the world. I visited her in her home village Buscalan in the Kalinga mountains of northern Luzon. The 100 old masters the ancient art of the bâtok, the original inking of the mountainous philippines. She gets up every morning and is hammering tribals and patterns until midday. Only women practise the art in the village and she is passing her skills down now to the younger generation. This album is also the story of Rudi, her brother. He was our guide to the village and showed us around. The fame of Whang Od in nurturing the whole village...
