    PHOTO IS:RAEL invites photographers, as well as video, performance, and interdisciplinary artists from around the world and at different stages of their careers, to submit their existing works or proposals for new works in the 11th International Photography Festival’s central exhibition and special projects, which will take place in Tel Aviv in November 2023. A committee of experts spanning multiple artistic genres will review the proposals and select 20 artists to exhibit their work. The ten chosen projects will be showcased prominently in the 11th PHOTO IS:RAEL International Photography Festival. In addition, 10 more projects will be displayed in the group exhibition “Unthemed”. The submission deadline is on April 23, 2023, and the submission fee is $15.00.

    Led by QUAD Education Curator, Daisy Lloyd, Surreal Derby is a collection of mixed media collages created by twelve students from Horizons Sixth Form who attend QUAD weekly, engaging in a variety of creative mediums and themes. The group used Lomography cameras such as the La Sardina, the Sprocket Rocket, and Diana F+ to experiment with multiple exposures, angles, and framing as they photographed key landmarks and interesting aspects of Derby City Centre. Working with the theme of surrealism and using mixed media and collage techniques, the students have created a collection of surrealist work depicting Derby from new perspectives.

    We’ve teamed up with Format Festival and photographer and brutalist expert Stephen Marland for a special Lomowalk where Stephen will walk us around the streets of Derby looking at the local architecture around Derby City Centre. There will be a mix of Lomography 35 mm cameras to choose from including the La Sardina, Sprocket Rocket, & Diana Mini, and one Fisheye 2 on a first come, first serve basis. We will help you load the cameras and give you some tips and tricks on shooting with each camera. The film will not be provided on the Lomowalk so please bring along a roll of 35 mm film of your choosing that can be processed either Colour or B&W. At the end of the walk, we will take 1 roll of your films to be processed. Spaces are limited, feel free to bring your own camera along too if you like to shoot more.

    Angela Izzo will be participating in this year’s LA Art Show, exhibiting her “Mystical Creatures” series, shot on the Petzval Lens with Lomography films. Through the looking glass of film photography and in-camera effects, “Mystical Creatures” creates a world of mystery and illusion in a gender fluid world. This Tarot is an experimental photo series by photographer Angela Izzo. Reconnecting Ancient and Modern realities, Izzo captures muses as archetypal characters in common settings. Using custom analog film techniques with non-standard cameras and film stocks, Izzo’s work immerses the viewer in intimate, dream-like fantasies. “Mystical Creatures” focuses on the Major Arcana, and is the first Tarot series created by the photographer.

This exhibition examines the range of Austen’s photography and specifically inserts her into a contemporary context as the modern woman she was. 22 newly printed photographs are paired, and accompanied by interpretive text by leading scholars, artists and activists from the LGBTQ+ and allied community.
