Classic × Classic : Using a Leica M3 camera to shoot with the New Petzval Art lens
11 28 Share TweetI participated in the Kickstarter campaign and purchased my very own new Petzval lens. I can’t wait to use with with my digital camera to experience its wonderful bokeh effect. I also wanted to try its effects when using a film camera but the lens has an EF mount. I didn’t have a Canon camera. See what I did with it after the jump.
Luckily, I found a Leica M adapter ring for EF cameras that just fits in my Leica M3 body. Here are the steps that you can also follow when you get the opportunity to use the *Petzval Lens* with the Leica M3.
The Petzval Lens
1.Use a rope or tape measure for measuring distance. The Leica M3 viewfinder and lens are separate, unlike a Canon or Nikon DSLR that directly sees the subject as well as the focus, so you need to find a rope tied to the body to measure the standard distance. This then corresponds to the focus on the Petzval Lens’ graduation.
For example, in order to focus one meter in length, the subject needs to be at the end of the measuring tape that leads to the lens.
2. Use a tripod for support when shooting to stabilize the camera. Make sure you have good exposure when dealing with the different aperture blades and then you can press the shutter !
Here are the results! I used the *LomoChrome Purple* film and regular color negative film.
Using the Petzval Lens with Leica M3 to focus is not easy. Snapping a photo needs some time to measure a good distance before hitting the shutter. This process also allows me to re-experience the atmosphere of 19th century photographers – personally, a timeless beauty in classical photography.
