Lomography Pioneers: @anarchy – Here for a Good Time

Only active between 2008-2011 on the website, @anarchy came and conquered the whole community with his unique compositions using multiple exposures and highly saturated colors. Not much can be known about him but his work speaks for itself and there’s no doubt he had a great impact on the Lomography Community.

@anarchy is not afraid to be experimental, which is probably why he has a big collection of cameras at his disposal. Not just collecting the usual cameras that collectors are after, he has many cameras from the old soviet era, especially those coming from Kiev, Fed, and Smena. Some of his best finds in his collection is a Soviet-made LC-A, Moska-5 medium format camera, and the Zenit FS-122-2 which is a Zenit SLR that has a 300 mm lens with a pistol grip shutter release accessory plus various filters and accessories, all fitted nicely into a leather case. With the abundance of cameras at his disposal it’s no wonder why he was always shooting.

Besides the rare Russian cameras, his use of the many Lomography cameras always made his work stand out and be unique. He dabbled with different cameras including the fast shooting cameras such as the Supersampler, the now discontinued Pop9, the underwater Frogeye camera for his beach escapes and the wide-angled Horizon Kompakt with which he would even make doubles.

@anarchy is also an avid user of slide film, encouraging many people in the community to try cross-processing to achieve saturated and out-of-this-world colors. In an article, he wrote in 2011 about the Fuji Sensia, he said that “Sensia was the film of choice for me when I decided to try out cross-processing for the first time, and man was I loving it! I was instantly hooked and it still is one of my favorite films for x-pro”. Never one to follow norms, he continued to cross-process different films which could be seen throughout the many pictures he uploaded.

His style is likened to a technique in music called sampling wherein the musician reuses pieces of another person's music and combines them with their own to create something entirely new. Looking through his albums you can see he’s very fond of making multiple exposures with community members from around the world, not knowing how the result would turn out beforehand. The final photos from these shots are breathtakingly captivating and it always makes you wonder how these images came together. Even when combining images he doesn't necessarily only choose to take “real life objects”, with pictures mixing and matching scenes from television and movies with the real world.

Always using the Lomo LC-A+ as his go-to camera, he has taken many iconic LC-A+ photos that have served as a major inspiration for the community. Like his namesake, his attitude of experimentation and not following rules opened the eyes of other members to the possibilities of what a photo could be. Despite his short stint on Lomography, @anarchy's photos and techniques will always be remembered and looked up for inspiration for many years to come.
